A porcelain fused to metal crown is a type of dental crown that consists of a metal base covered by a layer of tooth-colored porcelain. The metal base provides strength and durability, while the porcelain outer layer gives the crown a natural appearance that closely matches the color and translucency of natural teeth. This type of crown is commonly used in both the front and back teeth to restore damaged or decayed teeth, providing both aesthetics and functionality.

Types of PFM Crowns
There are primarily three types of porcelain fused to metal (PFM) crowns based on the composition of the metal substructure:
High Noble Precious Metal Crowns
These crowns are made from high noble metals such as gold, platinum, or palladium. High noble metal crowns are known for their biocompatibility, strength, and corrosion resistance. They are often used in cases where aesthetics are not a primary concern, such as for back teeth restorations.
Semi-Precious Metal Crowns
Noble metal crowns are made from metals that are less expensive than high noble metals but still exhibit good strength and biocompatibility. These crowns offer a balance between strength, biocompatibility, and cost.
Non-Precious Metal Crowns
Non-noble metal crowns are made from metals like cobalt-chromium alloys. These metals are less expensive than noble and high noble metals but may not be as biocompatible for some individuals. Non-noble metal crowns are often used in cases where cost is a primary concern, such as in the restoration of back teeth.
Advantages of PFM Crowns
Strength & Durability
The metal base provides strength and support, making the crown suitable for use in both front and back teeth.
Natural Appearance
The porcelain outer layer can be colour-matched to the surrounding teeth, providing a natural-looking result.
Biocompatibility
The materials used in porcelain fused to metal crowns are generally well-tolerated by the body.
Disadvantages of PFM Crowns
Metal Visibility
In some cases, a dark line may be visible at the gum line as the metal base can show through the porcelain, affecting the aesthetics of the restoration
Potential for Chipping
The porcelain outer layer can be prone to chipping or fracturing, especially if the crown is subject to excessive force or wear.
Wear on Opposing Teeth
The metal base of the crown can be abrasive to opposing teeth, potentially causing wear over time.
